How to view homework on the parent portal
Accessing the Parent Portal
The parent portal can be accessed in two ways.
1. Directly: open up a web browser and type https://parents.varndean.co.uk into the address bar and click ‘Go’ or press return.
2. Using the link on the Varndean School website: Navigate to the Varndean School website and click on the ‘Parent Portal’ button on the front page.

Logging on to the Parent Portal
Enter your username (1) and password (2) into their respective boxes and click ‘Log in’ (3). If you wish the Parent Portal to remember your details next time so you do not have to re-enter them then please adjust the slider accordingly.
If you have not received your username and password for the Varndean School Parent Portal then please enter your email address into the ‘User Name’ input box under ‘Forgotten your password?’ and click ‘Submit’ (4). Your username and password will then be emailed to the email address you have registered at the school.
If you do not have an email address registered with the school or you do not receive your details then please call the school’s main number (01273 561 281) and register an email address with us.
If you forget your password then please fill in the ‘Forgot my password?’ box as above and your details will automatically be emailed to you.
If this is your first time logging on to the Parent Portal then the system will request you set a new password:
Simply enter a new password into the ‘New Password’ input box (1) and type the same password into ‘Confirm New Password’ (2) then click ‘Ok’ (3)
Using the Parent Portal and General Tips
Navigating the Parent Portal is mainly done using the navigation menu on the left hand side of the screen (2), (3) and (4). To access a section’s submenu simply click on the heading (2) and (4) and a submenu (3) will appear.
If you have more than one student attending Varndean School then you will want to know which student you are currently viewing and how to switch between them. The picture in the top right hand screen of the Parent Portal (1) indicates which student is currently selected. This is the student whose information will appear when menu options are selected on the left hand side. To switch between students use the Student Switcher (5) and simply click on the picture of the student of interest. The number of pictures of students you see will change depending on how many students you have that attend Varndean School.
You can print many of the pages from the parent portal by clicking the ‘Print’ icon located directly under your selected student (1).
You can change your password at any time by clicking the picture of the padlock (6).
Once you have finished looking at your student’s data you can simply click the picture of a door (8) to log off.
The Parent Portal is supported on most modern web browsers and mobile devices. Varndean School recommends Google Chrome
Clicking on the ‘Snapshot’ view (3) under ‘General’ (2) gives you a general overview of behaviour and attendance. Clicking the green and red behaviour summaries will take you to a page which gives you greater detail about the student’s behaviour or achievement respectively. A timetable of the current day for your child is also displayed with indicators beside each session indicating whether the student was in attendance or not. The flags on the right hand side indicate whether the student is meeting Varndean School’s policies on behaviour and attendance.
The timetable view gives you a weekly overview of the student’s current timetable.
The ‘Personal details’ section enables you to make sure Varndean School is up to date with your latest details. Items on this page can be edited by single-clicking on them and filling out the resulting form. Changes made on this page are then sent to the school’s student data management team for review. Any previous requests for a data change are highlighted with a yellow triangle with a black exclamation mark.
The ‘iCal export’ screen enables you to export the student’s timetable, term dates, staff training and school holidays into a calendar application such as Google Calendar or Microsoft Outlook. Simply adjust the sliders to include the items you are interested in importing to your calendar then click export. This will produce a ‘.ical’ file which can then be imported into your personal calendars.
The ‘Attendance Summary’ screen offers you an overview of your student’s attendance for the current year to date. Codes and their meanings can be found by scrolling down to the ‘Code summary’ section which gives you further details about each code and what it means.
The ‘Attendance Comparison’ screen shows you how your student’s attendance compares with their tutor group and year group. The blue line represents your student, the yellow their tutor group and the red their year group. ‘Gaps’ in the graph indicate where no attendance was necessary such as school holidays and school closures.
The ‘Attendance Career’ screen shows your student’s attendance in previous terms.
The ‘Lesson Summary’ screen gives you access to attendance data broken down by subject. This is particularly helpful in spotting any attendance issues in a particular lesson.
The ‘Report absences’ screen allows you deal with past absences and informing the school of planned future absence. If your student has an absence that needs attention it will show up under the General > Snapshot screen which, when clicked, will direct you to this page. To deal with an absence or to inform the school of a future absence: select the relevant option (1), fill in the dates of absence (2) and (3), fill in the reason (4) and (5) and click ‘Update’ (6).
The ‘Achievements’ screen allows you to see all positive behaviour that has been recognised by staff. You are able to see details of the achievement such as when, where, in which subject and by whom the achievement was issued. You are also able to see any comments made by the issuing teacher about the achievement.
Towards the bottom of the screen you are able to see the total amount of points the student has accumulated. Each page only shows ten separate achievements but previous achievements can be seen by clicking ‘Next’ or ‘All’ as indicated by the red box below:
Clicking on the charts button as indicated below, by the red box, allows you to see your student’s achievements represented in graphical form. This is very useful as you are able to see at a glance which areas your student is doing very well in.
The ‘Behaviours’ screen allows you to see all negative behaviour recorded by staff about your student. Similarly to ‘Achievements’ you are able to see when, where, which subject and by whom the behaviour was issued by along with any comments:
Again similarly to ‘Achievements’, clicking on the ‘Charts’ tab at the top of the ‘Behaviours’ screen brings up a graphical analysis and break down of your student’s data enabling you to see at a glance if there are any areas in which your student may be struggling.
If your student ever receives a detention, the details will appear here. Details include the date, time and location of the detention; the reason the detention was put in place and whether the detention was attended by the student or not.
If your student ever gets put on an electronic report card the details will appear on this screen. Details include the starting and finishing dates of being on report and the details of the behaviours being monitored.
The ‘Assessments’ screen shows you details of how your student is progressing academically and how close they are to their targets. Grades for each subject are accessed by clicking on the + next to the subject’s name revealing the results.
Clicking the ‘Charts’ tab at the top of the ‘Assessments’ screen brings up a graphical representation of your student’s progress in each subject along with their target which is the right-most column.
The ‘Exam entries’ screen shows you which exams your student has been entered for.
The ‘Examination results’ screen show you results of examinations that your student has taken.
Key Stage Results
The ‘Key Stage results’ screen offers you an overview of your student’s results at the end of each key stage including key stage two (end of primary school). This enables you to see how much progress your student has made in each key stage whilst attending Varndean.
The examination timetable screen offers you a list of your student’s upcoming exams. It lists the time, date, subject and module and location of your student’s exam.
Clicking on the ‘Reports’ button will bring up your student’s latest school report. This information includes attendance, current assessment grades and targets for each subject your student undertakes.
Clicking on the ‘More reports’ button as highlighted above with the red box brings up a report selector allowing you to choose previous reports by clicking on the report.
Please note that if you do not have a browser that supports embedded PDFs then the website will prompt you to download a PDF copy of your student’s report. If you are unsure whether your current browser supports this or not then we recommend you install Google Chrome as this comes with a built-in PDF viewer.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: If I change my email address – does my username change?
A: Yes, if you update your email address via the Parent Portal you will be emailed with your new username. Your password will remain the same, so update your email address and then log out and log back in again with your new email address.
