Could you spare some time to be a parent reader?
What is this programme?
We believe we are a community of readers because reading is not only enjoyable, but important to our academic success. We are recruiting parent volunteers who can commit to assisting in at least one library lesson a fortnight.
What are library lessons?
Every fortnight, each English class in Year 7, 8 and 9 goes to the library to browse and read. During these lessons, we like to listen to students, read and discuss reading with them.
What will I need to do?
You will be working one to one with students doing the following: listening to a student read and checking understanding; helping students choose an appropriate text; explaining vocabulary; reading to a student.
How do I sign up?
Simply email our English teacher leading on literacy, Ms Hampton, jenniferhampton@varndean.co.uk or leave a message at school reception and she will be in touch. You will need to complete parts of an application form, so that we have your details and can carry out DBS checking (a routine procedure for all adults volunteering and working in schools). This can be done at school or by post. We will then look at your availability and when library lessons are on.
Will I receive any training?
You will receive a short training session on The Varndean Reading Toolkit and any further support you require.
How long will I need to do it for?
We would like our parent volunteers to participate for a minimum of one half term, however we would very much welcome anyone who could commit for longer.
Who will I work with?
The class teacher will allocate a student for you to work with in the lesson. They might change around during the lesson or the whole 50 minutes could be with one individual. Sometimes, students work well in pairs and you may be asked to work with more than one student.
How will I make a difference?
Everything that our parent reader volunteers do will facilitate engagement with text and reading for pleasure. Research shows us that young people who enjoy reading and read regularly are more likely to reach their academic potential.
