Mathematics

The Mathematics department has very high expectations for all of our students. We have created an environment encouraging positive achievement, where students can develop to their full potential.

We ensure the work they do in Mathematics relates to all areas of the curriculum and provides pupils with excellent numeracy skills that will give them the tools needed for the world today.

We are also part of the Year 7 Specialist Schools Curriculum, and run a module called ‘How and Why?’ as part of the School of Discovery.

Without mathematics, there's nothing you can do. Everything around you is mathematics. Everything around you is numbers.

Why Study this Subject?

Mathematics is the tool and language of commerce, engineering and other sciences. It helps us recognise patterns and to understand the world around us. Mathematics plays a vital role in many aspects of modern life, e.g. space travel; safeguarding credit card details on the internet; modelling the spread of epidemics; predicting stock market prices; business decision making.

As society becomes more technically dependent, there will be an increasing requirement for people with a high level of mathematical training. Analytical and quantitative skills are sought by a wide range of employers. A qualification in mathematics provides students with a broad range of skills in problem solving, logical reasoning and flexible thinking. This leads to careers that are exciting, challenging and diverse in nature.

Topics of Study and Assignments

Years 7 and 8 - Students will work on number, algebra, geometry, statistics and probability; becoming proficient at problem solving and prepared for their GCSE.

Years 9, 10 and 11 - Students continue to work in all of the above areas, developing and enhancing their skills ready for their GCSE examination.

Years 10 and 11 option – Additional Mathematics - for those pupils who are thinking of studying Mathematics at A-Level or have a strong ability in the subject, Additional Mathematics provides the stepping stones for college.
