Food & Catering Technician

Varndean School is seeking to appoint an enthusiastic, committed and creative Food and Catering Technician.  This is a permanent, part time position, starting as soon as possible.

30 hours per week , term time only (39 weeks per year)  

Scale 3, point 14-17 ; £17,681 - £18,672 (actual starting salary £12,130)


The Food Technology department is a  busy and productive area of the School within the wider Design Technology department. In this role you would be providing technical, practical and administrative support to the Food Technology department for 22.5 hours per week. In addition, you would be supporting the Varndean Catering team at lunchtimes by serving food, operating tills and carrying out general catering duties during the school lunch service (7.5 hours per week). The post would suit someone with an interest in food hospitality and catering, who enjoys practical activities and who is flexible in their approach.

Some of the work you may be expected to do would be:

  • Preparing and clearing away materials and equipment

  • Assisting teaching staff with demonstration lessons and practicals

  • Making arrangements for maintenance and repair services to equipment

  • Assisting in the maintenance of health and safety standards

  • Contribute to the planning & development of systems/procedures/policies

  • Promoting healthy eating

  • Maintaining stock and breakage records, catalogues and user manuals

  • Ordering, receiving and accounting for new stock and equipment

  • Operating tills

  • Serving students
