The long wait for GCSE results ended this morning as the class of 2025 came in to collect their much anticipated results. Surrounded by family friends and members of staff, envelopes were opened with the usual mix of nerves and excitement!
As the photos show there was a huge amount to celebrate and we are delighted with how much our students have achieved. Their hard work has paid off and they have made us very proud.
Overall the outcomes were excellent with over 600 results graded 7 or higher and the majority of students securing a pass in both English and mathematics. Within these numbers were some incredible individual success stories reflecting the talent, determination, diligence and resilience of the students in this cohort.
Shelley Baker, Headteacher, commented:
These are fantastic results and I am delighted that so many students have the grades their hard work deserves and the results they need to go on and start the next phase of their lives. This was a year group that worked right through until the end and never gave up. The courage shown by many to succeed in the face of adversity is inspirational and as a group they took their exams very seriously and this has paid off. I am sure they will go on to achieve great things and on behalf of the whole Varndean community I wish them all the best for the future.
Great results don’t happen by chance and Varndean would like to thank everyone who has played a part in supporting these students to achieve what they have. Our partnership with families has never been stronger and we are grateful for all the ways they get behind the school and encourage our efforts. We would also like to recognise the amazing staff we have here at the school whose expertise, commitment and professionalism means that students are well supported at all times.
We are thrilled to jointly celebrate the remarkable achievements of our students across Brighton and Hove. Through steadfast partnership and collaboration, our schools have collectively ensured that every child in our city has access to a high-quality education, enabling them to make significant progress.
We take immense pride in the exam results this year, which reflect fantastic levels of attainment and achievement across all schools in Brighton and Hove. These results are a testament to the hard work and resilience of a brilliant group of students, as well as the unwavering commitment of our schools to joint practice development and collaborative efforts for the benefit of every young person in our city.
The success of the 'Class of 2024' is a shared accomplishment, and we are extremely proud of each student. We wish them all the very best for their future endeavours and are confident that they will continue to thrive and excel.
Results day is finally here and the long wait for the class of 2024 is over. It was wonderful to see so many of them in school this morning to collect their grades alongside friends, family and staff at the school.
Happily (and unsurprisingly for such a great group of young people) there was much to celebrate and despite the nervousness on arrival the room soon filled with the joy so many students felt at seeing that their hard work had paid off.
Once again overall grades were excellent. More than 750 grades were grade 7 or better and nearly two hundred students achieved grade 5 or better in English and maths. A number of students opened their envelopes to see largely nothing but grade nines while others, including those who had found school particularly difficult, secured grades in their key subjects. Needless to say staff at the school are delighted and extremely proud of all that the students have achieved.
Headteacher Shelley Baker commented:
These are fantastic results and richly deserved. This year group is such a fantastic group of young people and they were fantastic all the way through school. They took the exam season in their stride, prepared themselves wonderfully well and I am so pleased that all their hard work has paid off. I am sure they will go on to college or work with confidence and I know their futures will be bright as they have the results and the character they need to go on to lead fulfilling lives. I wish them every success and happiness and urge them to keep in touch.
Varndean School would like to thank everyone who has played a part in making this year group so successful. Great results don’t happen by chance and are the result of the hard work of a lot of people and we are grateful to everyone involved, teachers, families, mentors, friends and of course the students themselves for all that they have contributed. Education is a partnership between children, families and school and we are very lucky that these relationships at Varndean are so strong.
Well done to the class of 2024! Enjoy the celebrations and we wish you all the very best for the future.
Varndean students celebrate a fantastic set of exam results.
Despite the gloomy weather Varndean School was full of joy this morning as the class of 23 came in to collect their GCSE results.
Following the numerous negative press stories of how grades would be lower this year many students were nervous this morning about what would be in their envelope. Happily nerves were soon replaced by smiles, laughter and often tears of joy, As one student succinctly put it “well that is pretty good then, everything I need for college and more”.
Overall, grades at the school were excellent. Of particular note is the huge number of grade 8s and 9s awarded to students - well over 500 and the fact that nearly 200 students were awarded grade 5 or better in both English and Mathematics which is incredible.
Headteacher Shelley Baker commented:
these are tremendous results and all of the staff of the school are thrilled that the commitment and hard work of this group of year 11 students has paid off. This is a day for them to celebrate and enjoy and it is very gratifying to know that they are now very well set up for the next stage of their lives. They are a great group of young people who will go on to even more success but will do so while also being kind and thoughtful too.
Great results like these don’t happen by chance. The dedication, professionalism and skill of the staff at the school has been complemented by the patience, encouragement and support of Varndean families and these achievements are a reflection of the genuine partnership we have with the wonderful Varndean community. We would like to thank all the Varndean families who have worked with us so effectively to nurture the talents of the class of 2023.
Well done Varndean students, enjoy the moment and we look forward to hearing about your future success.

Such good results don’t happen in isolation and we would like to thank the families who have supported our work at school so positively over the last five years. Their support, patience and encouragement for their children will have made a significant difference to their achievements. We would also like to recognise the skill, dedication and professionalism of the teachers at Varndean. These results show how well the students have been taught and how their thoughtful and individualised approach has paid off.

Brighton and Hove Secondary Headteachers are jointly celebrating the achievements of our students. Schools have worked in partnership, closely and collaboratively, to ensure that every child in our city has access to a good education and is able to make strong progress. We take collective responsibility for a set of exams results that reflect great levels of attainment and achievement across all schools in Brighton and Hove. We are particularly proud of the ‘Class of 2022’ because of all that they have endured during their journey through Secondary School. Today’s results reflect the hard work and tenacity of fantastic group of students, and an unerring commitment from all schools to joint practice development and partnership for the benefit of every young person in our city.
We also include the following statement on recommendation from the DfE: "Given the uneven impact of the pandemic on school and college performance data, the Government has said you should not make direct comparisons between the performance data for one school or college and another, or to data from previous years.”
