On March 14th 2025, we proudly hosted our inaugural International Women’s Day Panel Event, marking a powerful celebration of the achievements and potential of women and girls. This landmark event not only recognised the accomplishments of women worldwide but also honoured the incredible talents and successes within our own school community.

As we gathered in the year of our school’s 100th anniversary, we reflected on the legacy of our founder, Ethel Ellis, whose vision laid the foundation for a century of empowering education. The panel event, organised by our dedicated Feminist Society led by Sara Connolly, showcased the stories of extraordinary women across diverse fields, inspiring our students to dream big and pursue their ambitions with confidence.

The distinguished panel featured five trailblazing women who are leading the way in their respective industries:

  • Bella Sankey – Leader of Brighton and Hove City Council, championing local governance and community advocacy.

  • Sian Berry – Member of Parliament for Brighton Pavilion, who spoke passionately about public service and political change.

  • Rebecca Wilson – Infectious Disease Scientist, whose groundbreaking research is advancing global health.

  • Sammy Quayle – Professional Footballer and Coach, who shared her journey breaking barriers in women’s sports.

  • Jane Heathwood – Gym Owner, advocating for wellness and female entrepreneurship.

Throughout the afternoon, senior students led engaging discussions, asking thought-provoking questions about leadership, resilience, and the power of using one’s voice. Families, staff, and students were captivated by the panelists' insights, reinforcing the message that no dream is too big and no goal is out of reach.

Speaking to the students who were awarded for their outstanding achievements Headteacher Shelley Baker said, "I am immensely proud of each and every one of you. Your dedication, creativity, and courage are truly inspiring. Today, we not only celebrate your achievements but also pave the way for future generations."

The event also featured a vibrant festival celebrating the creativity and advocacy of our school community. Attendees enjoyed workshops, interactive displays, and the opportunity to connect with role models who are making a difference. The event raised over £220 for charities supporting vulnerable women and girls in our city.

In a milestone announcement, the Headteacher confirmed that the International Women’s Day Panel will become an annual tradition, ensuring that the stories of inspirational women and girls will continue to empower future generations.

Councillor Bella Sankey said, “It was an honour and joy to speak at the International Women’s Day Panel at Varndean School, meeting the other women speakers and connecting with students. I want to thank the Feminist Society for their kind invitation and for the brilliant work they are doing in primary schools and at Varndean to support and empower girls and young women. They are inspiring – and give me so much hope for the future. It’s exciting news that the panel will take place annually, empowering girls for years to come.”

We extend our heartfelt thanks to all our incredible panelists, the Feminist Society, and all the students, staff, and families who made this event a resounding success. We look forward to hosting this celebration again next year and continuing to uplift the voices that shape a brighter future.
