Since 2021, Varndean School has been fostering a culture of recognition and achievement through its unique reward badge initiative, a project in collaboration with their long-term design partner, Toop Studio. Over 30 bespoke badges have been commissioned to date, each designed to celebrate not only academic and sporting success, but also acts of resilience, good character, and outstanding contributions to the school community.
These badges, proudly worn on student and staff blazers, serve as a visible symbol of accomplishment, creating a tangible sense of pride throughout the school. They are awarded weekly in the headteacher's office, providing a formal and personal moment of recognition.
I have worked with Varndean School for over 20 years; the school badge project is among the most rewarding of all the commissions I have done – I was recently invited to join a badge reward session, and it was great to see the pride on the faces of all the recipients.

Varndean has also incorporated student creativity into the project, running competitions for new badge designs. Winning students then have the opportunity to collaborate with Shadric Toop to refine their concepts for production. This not only empowers students but also fosters a sense of ownership in the school's reward system.
